Meathead in the Arizona Desert

Today was a simple, yet effective upper body meathead workout at the Omni hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona. Tomorrow Bedros and I are going for a hike.

But first, today's recap:

Warmup
- Pushups
- Face Pull

1A) DB Chest Press
1B) Pullup

2A) 1-Arm DB Shoulder Press
2B) Row

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tips:
"Discipline and freedom are not mutually exclusive but mutually dependent because otherwise, you'd sink into chaos." - Paulo Coelho

You will struggle, and that's okay. Everyone does, but if you persist, nothing can stop you. To succeed, you must make sacrifices. You have to be tough on yourself and demand more of yourself. Be focused on what matters, be clear on what counts, and never, ever give up on what matters to you.

Push on,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT

PS - Remember...

All bad times come to end. Until then, we are left with a powerful choice. To quit or to carry on. If we quit, we only make the ending worse. If we carry on, we will feel the situation getting harder at first. However, everyday that you make progress, things will get better and the future will become brighter. Never forget this.

Grab a copy of my book before it is sold out on Amazon

If you feel like you're drowning in stress every day, and just don't know how to get started on the road to success in life, I have good news and bad news for you today.

The good news is that you CAN take back control of your life and finally reach your big goals and dreams, no matter how busy you are.

"Thank You! This is just what I needed at this moment," wrote busy mom, Ali Kerr. "Before reading The Perfect Day Formula I was going day to day with no plan and getting sidetracked by little things. I felt like I was drowning in stress each day. The #1 lesson I learned from Craig was to engineer my day instead of letting it happen to me."

But here's the BAD news...

You need to hurry because our publisher has only ordered a limited number of copies, and we've sold out on Amazon before. Don't miss the "best book on time management and productivity"

1C) Band Pull

2A) DB 1-Arm Overhead Press
2B) Face Pull

3A) Pushups to failure
3B) Pullups

Perfect Day unboxing video from my bud, Bedros Keuilian => https://www.facebook.com/bedroskeuilian/videos/vb.521921624551150/920863364656972/?type=2&theater

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated failures. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” – Calvin Coolidge

Push onward,

Denver KB Swing PB

Didn't sleep well last night, but still had a good workout at the Colorado Athletic Club in DT Denver.

Today's Training:

1A) Kettlebell Swing - worked up to PB of 80lbs x 25 reps
1B) Mobility

2A) Squat
2B) Mobility

3) Walking Lunges

Short 45-minute session.

Kickbutt Mindset Tip #1:
The life we lead is due to the choices we make. These are the friends we've chosen. This is how we've chosen to spend our time. This is how we've decided to take care of ourselves. Our choice, no one else. If we want to change, we have to take responsibility for the world we create for ourselves. You must implement the 5 Pillars of Transformation to make BIG changes. Plan and prepare better. Get professional accountability. Recruit positive social support. Give yourself an incentive. Set a Big Deadline. And act!

focus, Focus, FOCUS on what REALLY matters. => Action

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip ... PERFECT for the weekend:
Without a doubt, one of the most difficult things about losing fat is eating in social situations. The peer-pressure (from both the ignorant and immature) is the toughest test of your commitment.

BUT...

If you want to succeed, you have to lay the ground rules. There is no room for debate. You are either in or you are out.

And you might just surprise some folks when you show them that life can go on if you don’t eat chicken wings with them.

So... Be loud and proud of what you are doing. There are more folks secretly wishing someone will take charge and be a healthy role model for them.

It might not happen overnight, but if you continue to lead by healthy example – without preaching or being condescending – you can build an entourage of social support and people who want to be healthy like you.

This will build powerful relationships that will take your health to the next level. Stay strong and keep on pushing on!

Get going,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT

Morning Mint and Book Update

Good morning. Time for a cup of refreshing peppermint tea.

Off day today. Squats tomorrow.

Lots of reading last night (finished the book in the top left).

Read, reading, read, and wrote.

Now for another PD in DVR.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
Lead yourself out of temptation as quickly as possible. Don't put yourself in situations where the allure of vices is too strong for your willpower and rituals. If you find yourself in trouble, cut your losses, but don't let others make you feel guilty for your decisions. Surround yourself with positive people and eliminate the toxic ones in your life.

Stay true,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT

Crickets and Intervals

Been hiding this too long.

But wanted to share these bars with you...

The best are the Cacao flavor.

The other ones are too sweet, but I don't mind the new Banana Bread flavor.

Yep, cricket flour.

www.exo.co

But not crickets on a stick (and scorpions, too!) like I was offered in Thailand.

So this morning's after workout breakfast was an Exo Cacao bar, walnuts, a banana, and almond butter mixed in a bowl.

Good times.

Today's workout:

1) Intervals - 4x1minute

2A) Sphinx Pushup (aka Plank to Triceps Extension) - 2x20
2B) DB Incline Hammer Curl - 2x10

That's it.

Good times.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
"Success is simple once you realize how hard it is.” Then you will accept how much effort, honesty, responsibility, long-range planning, creativity, intensity, discipline, thought and control the process is going to take. It is not easy. It is not going to happen from any magic button. Only once you accept that will you succeed.

Success requires you to set up routines and stick to them. It is the creation of the routines that requires more discipline. Focus on quality, not quantity. You need to integrate all aspects of the 5 Pillars of Transformation, from planning to social support to accountability to an incentive to The Big Deadline, for maximum results.

You CAN - and WILL - do it. I believe in you. I've seen it done a thousand times by every age, in any circumstance. This time is your time.

Never quit,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT

Denver Deadlift

Really great workout in Denver today. For the last two days I've felt stronger and more energetic than I have in months. Not 100% sure why, but I have been great with nutrition and consistently sleeping 7.5 hours a night.

Good times in the Colorado Athletic Club today...

1A) Hang Clean
1B) Mobility

2A) Trap Bar DL - 2015-2016 Personal Best of 345x7
2B) Pushups

3A) Bench Press - 195x4x3
3B) More Trap Bar DL - 225 for a few high rep sets

Now for a 10 hour set at the ETR offices. Lots of great things coming to the TT and ETR world soon...

...including big news on the 6th TT Summit.

Stay tuned.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
"Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone." – Pablo Picasso … You must act on your biggest opportunity immediately. Strike while the iron is hot. Close the deal. Don't let it slip away. This is not the time to hold back. Create your plan, set your objectives, and achieve your goal. No more procrastinating. Do it now!

Stay strong,

Brain Dump Time!

Hey, before you leave work or go to bed, here's the #1 thing you need to do.

It's called a "Brain Dump."

Take out a sheet of paper.

Write down all the stressful and work-related thoughts racing through your mind.

Clear your head.

Leave all of those mind goblins on that paper.

Take the paper and put it in a drawer until tomorrow morning.

Next...

Take a deep breath... and relax.

Now you can go home to your family and be present for them... or you can drift off to sleep without worries.

That's the power of the Brain Dump.

It's like a "massage for your mind!"

Killer Kettlebell Circuit

I know this is a killer circuit, because it just about killed me! I managed 4 rounds in 24 minutes. The last round was brutal.

53 lbs kettlebell used for all exercises. It was supposed to be a 5x20 workout, but I could only manage 4 rounds. There is no rest between exercises, and 1-2 minutes rest between circuits.

Killer Kettlebell 5x20 (in theory!)
- Goblet Squat (20 reps)
- KB Swing (20)
- 1-arm KB Row (10 per side)
- Forward lunge (10 per side, hold kb on same side as working leg)
- elevated pushup (10 per side, 1 hand up on kettlebell)

Dumbbell version if you don't have a KB
- Goblet Squat
- Box Jump
- 1-Arm DB row
- Forward lunge
- Elevated pushup (hand on block or hexagonal dumbbell)

Alright, off to Toronto for a hotel stay and then an early AM flight to Denver for 3 weeks (with a mini trip to Phoenix on Feb 23rd).

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
If you are struggling, stop feeling sorry for yourself and go out and help someone. Add value to the world. Turn your moping into mentoring and help someone climb the ladder in your world. The best thing you can do for yourself is to make everyone around you better.

"Associate with people who are likely to improve you. Welcome those whom you are capable of improving. The process is a mutual one. People learn as they teach." – Seneca

PS – Here's some Human praise for The Perfect Day…

"Everybody wants to live the perfect life but fail to understand you do that by designing and living the perfect day, day after day. The Perfect Day Formula shows you exactly what you have to do to create that day." – Larry Winget, New York Times bestselling author and television personality

"Craig was the first person to push me on the importance of creating my Perfect Day — a habit that is the secret behind all of my accomplishments. He is always an inspiration. As a busy mom of two young kids, I strongly believe The Perfect Day Formula is required if you wish to accomplish something big!"- Diana Keuilian, author of The Recipe Hacker

"Craig Ballantyne is one of the most respected entrepreneurs in the fitness industry. I have had the pleasure of having him as a business coach and mentor for several years now and I quickly learned that when Craig speaks you better listen. He is widely known to be super-productive, hyper-focused and amazingly successful. In The Perfect Day Formula, Craig reveals his 'magic sauce' that has propelled him to such great heights. It isn't any fad gimmick or quick fix strategy. The principles, guidelines and strategies he teaches are based on ancient wisdom and are timeless. I have already implemented a number of his strategies with great success. I cannot think of anyone that wouldn't benefit from his formula. We have and will continue to give it out to our own coaching clients." – Cody Sipe, Functional Aging Institute

PPS – There's one more reason you need to act now…

With each passing day this year you get busier and busier.

Life gets in the way. Your momentum dips. Your motivation is lost.

But research shows that when we take fast action and get rapid results, then we are more likely to make these results permanent.

This is true for losing weight, making more money, and improving any habit.

If you decide to do nothing, you'll remain in the same painful, frustrating, and vicious cycle of working hard, getting frustrated, doubling down and working harder, and only getting more frustrated, and then… well, then what?

There's no happy ending if you decide to avoid action.

But when you put the step-by-step Perfect Day Formula into place, your breakthroughs will come faster than ever before.

Bodyweight Core and 4-minute workouts and Fitcast Perfect Day Podcast

Today's bodyweight (mostly) workout was done in the garage. Tomorrow will be off and then Saturday is a deadlift day. The glutes need another day off after the squat and lunges from Tuesday.

Foam Rolling, Stretching, WYLIT, Warmup pushups and band pull

1) Pause Pushups - 33

2A) RKC Plank
2B) Side Plank

3A) Band Pull
3B) Kneeling KB 1-Arm Overhead Press
3C) Ab Wheel

And here's another 4-minute workout and my 10-3-2-1 formula recapped:

BTW, here's another podcast I was on...

Craig Ballantyne comes back on the show to talk about how to construct your Perfect Day, how to build habits of steel, the 5 things all his transformation contest winners had in common, getting the most out of your training and life, and more! You can pick up The Perfect Day Formula on Amazon in Kindle, Paperback, or Audible.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
“Success is simple once you accept how hard it is. “When you accept the sacrifices that success requires, success simply becomes a matter of following a proven set of steps…and never, ever giving up on what is important to you.

Focus,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT

PS - Get up early and give your number one priority the focus it deserves for at least 15 minutes every single morning.

Punishing Lower Body Garage Gym Workout

Today's training was the lazy way out. So I made it tough as heck.

You see, it snowed overnight. And when it's cold and there's snow on the car, I get lazy and just train in the garage instead of going to the gym for barbell squats.

So that means I make myself train harder to make up for it.

Today's Session:

1A) KB Goblet Squat - 70x36 reps
1B) KB Swing - 4 sets of 70x12

2) DB Split Squat

3) DB RDL

4) DB Walking Lunge

Pretty sure the Goblet Squat was a personal best. Geez, I really hope so.

Next big workout is Friday with a deadlift session. On Sunday I head back to Denver for a couple of weeks.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:

Most people want you to remain in your comfort zone. They resist and hate change. They believe they are stuck and want you to remain stuck with them. You must not harbor any bitterness or resentment against those that try to hold you back. They know not what they do. Stay strong and never give up on what is important to you...even if that means a big step out of your comfort zone. Keep on pushing on.

Push to break free,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT

PS - Push yourself and believe in yourself.

Notice when you are tempted by self-rejection and fight it.

Caffeinated Training in the Garage

Today was an off-day of stretching, but Sunday morning was a tough upper body workout in the garage gym.

1A) KB 1-Arm Press - 4x8
1B) DB 1-Arm Row - 3x12

2A) DB Chest Press - 4x10
2B) KB Squat - 4x20

3A) Hammer Curls
3B) Ab Wheel

There was also too much caffeine consumed yesterday morning! Made for an interesting workout, LOL.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
Eliminate the clutter in your life. This clutter, whether it's mental or physical, stops you from taking action to improve your life. But more importantly, the clutter stops you from thinking.

Most people don’t make the time to think and that's why they get stuck, because they can’t see through the problems in their life when they're so busy and have too much going on.

Back on track,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT

Deadlifting after Denver

This is the big news in my world today.

Here's the link to my 4th time being on the Jason Ferruggia show

=> https://soundcloud.com/thejayferruggiashow/85-creating-your-vision-for-life-w-craig-ballantyne

It includes 3 things I learned from owning a dog...and I explain my Perfect Day Formula and goal setting methods.

There is also another podcast...below. My goal is 100 of them this year, and I'll post each good one.

Today's Workout

Back to the gym in lil' ol' Stratford after a Deload week in Denver and a smooth journey home yesterday...

1A) Hang Clean
1B) Mobility

2A) Deadlift
2B) Mobility

3A) Bench Press
3B) Goblet Bulgarian Split Squat

Now a weekend to relax, read, and write. For the past 5 years I've spent Superbowl weekend with my friend Joel Marion and 50 of our friends and fitness colleagues down in Florida. But not this year. Instead, I'm hibernating and hiding out up on the farm.

And I'm really, really going to enjoy it.

The weather's fine, the dog is funny, and the weekend will be great.

Hope you enjoy yours wherever you are.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:

Build others UP because it will only make you more successful. If you don't have social support, take charge as the leader. Be confident in your choices. People will respect your decisions, even if it seems at first that they don't. Eventually, a lot of people will come to you for advice and support. You are the one making the right decision. Never forget that. And never give up on what really matters to you and your family. Take care of yourself first so that you have the energy and strength for others. You can do it.

Have an amazing weekend,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT

Off Day in Denver

Off-day in Denver. Traveling home today as well.

Deadlifting tomorrow.

CASS-Free Day today.

Using this as motivation:
To create new habits, you must internalize the benefits of your actions. Don’t meditate because it is good for you. Meditate because it feels good. Don’t have difficult discussions out of obligation. Do so because you enjoy how the challenge makes you grow. Don’t exercise for health. Do so because it makes you feel great and gives you energy. Do your work because of how it makes you feel AND what it helps you become.

Stay strong,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT

...but are worried about the weekend:

Walk through the weekend in your mind. Pick your poison (1 treat), prepare your plan, and survive the Superbowl.

To relieve pain

If you're worried that you have to pound your joints on the treadmill with hard exercise in order to lower your cholesterol and lose weight, then today's new research update is going to leave you smiling.

You see, according to an article in Forbes magazine, 60-year old men and women, like Sharon Gutterman of Connecticut, have been able to decrease their bad cholesterol and even lower their blood pressure using a pain-free, gentle form of exercise.

It also eliminates back problems, reduces neck pain, strengthens your knees and hips, and can dramatically reduce anxiety.

83% of female users also reported dramatic decreases in their menopause symptoms!

Dr. Timothy McCall, a board-certified specialist in internal medicine, says it’s the best preventative medicine for almost everything, referring to one study that found a 23% decrease in cholesterol when this exercise was used.

And the best part is that you can do this exercise in the comfort of your own home without any equipment.

Even better, you’ll never have to pay for expensive chiropractor visits, pain medication, or pricey massages ever again.

Denver Deload and SuperBally Weekend Plans

Final weight workouts of my deload week in Denver. We got a little snow last night but nothing crazy, just a few inches.

Yesterday was upper body with a lot of high rep work...pullups, pushups, face pulls, dumbbell presses.

Today was lower body.

1A) Goblet Squat
1B) RDL

2A) 1-Leg Hip Bridge
2B) Ball Leg Curl
2C) Ball Plank

3A) DB Split Squat
3B) Short Sprints

Moderate intensity. Didn't push any limits or set any records.

I have a couple more days in Denver, and will do some extended morning old-man warm-ups.

On Thursday I head home for a SuperBallyBowl weekend, and a real deadlift sessions on Saturday morning.

And instead of watching the Superbowl, I plan on watching SPECTRE.

Bond > Newton + Manning + Beyonce

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
"Remember that the word “leadership” comes from a verb: to lead. Leadership is an ACTION. Leadership is a CHOICE. Each and every one of us can be leaders IF WE CHOOSE TO BE.

In other words, the path to becoming a true leader is not really about who you are, it’s about what you do.

Leadership is when you charge toward your true purpose and inspire others to help you through discipline, focus, and generosity." - Bedros

Lead on,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT
