New free workout for me

Ha, here's how you get a free workout in South Beach.

Just go in nice and early and tell the front desk that all you have is a $100. They won't be able to make change, so they might just let you in free.

Worked for me today.

Then I hit...

1A) Squats
1B) Box Jumps

2A) Bench Press
2B) Pullups

That was it.

Even though I slept a lot last night, I was dragging a little today. Not sure why.

This was the first workout on my new 4-week program. I still pulled off all of the reps at my new weight, but it was a struggle. Next up - bringing the energy this weekend at our Live TT Seminar in Tampa, Florida. It's going to be awesome.

My Amazing Miami Weekend and workout

Up by 4. Thinking and writing done by 6am. Meditation. Followed by training.

All of this done in an amazing condo down in South Beach.

I'm very blessed to live this life.

I've very blessed to have a chance to work this hard, 6 days a week minimum, at least 8 hours a day.

Yesterday Joel Marion and I went to a Miami Heat game. He has season's tickets, 3rd row, near mid-court. I'll post some photos on FB. It was great. Last night, we celebrated a couple of recent career victories with a dinner at Zuma, trying their world famous rib-eye. It was one of the best steaks I have ever had.

Today I'm writing to you from a condo overlooking the bay in Miami where cruise ships go in and out, big yachts dock, and jet skis skitter about in their wake. It's hypnotic. It's downright amazing.

My opportunities for this good life come through personal responsibility.

Freedom through Structure.

Victories through Discipline.

Opportunity through Responsibility.

Results through Habit.

Circuits vs. Cardio

You know it's a good workout when you're sweating up a storm in 45 degree Farenheit weather. Good times down here in Florida, with another great garage gym training session in the books.

Today was a big circuit. Well, a medium circuited repeated a big number of times.

1) Double KB Front Squat - 10 reps
2) KB Swing - 20 reps
3) MB Slam - 10 reps
4) Ab Wheel - 10 reps

10 rounds. About 25 minutes.

So much better than cardio...where you'll get no results, overuse injuries, and possibly die of a heart attack. Or at least I would. (I'll show you research next week on exactly what I's my favorite study of 2013.)

5 exercises NOT to do

Before we get to the exercises, a quick weekend update...
For the past week I've been in Florida on a "working" vacation
at my friend Joel Marion's house. Sometimes the Marion's are
silly enough to let me babysit their eldest kiddo...and here
are the hilarious results. Good times...
...But now let's get on with the exercise show...

Recently I received an email from the writers at Men's Health asking:

"What are five exercises that trainers hate, and what smart
replacements are for each?

My answers on the Five Exercises Not to Do:

1) Situps or crunches

Why: These are terrible for the low back/spine, as shown by
research from Dr. Stuart McGill. These exercises compress
the discs in your spine and can cause serious low back injuries.
Alternatives: Stability Ball or Power Wheel Rollout, TRX
Mountain Climbers, Plank or Bodysaw/Rocking Plank, or Stability
Ball Plank (30% harder on your abs than a regular plank)

2) Broomstick Twists

Why? Useless. Just useless.

Alternative: Cross body mountain climbers, spiderman climbs,
side plank (with TRX)

3) Leg Press

Why? Possibly dangerous for low back due to the rounding of the
spine in the bottom position.

Alternatives: Split Squats, Forward lunges, Narrow-Stance
Barbell Squat, Goblet Squat

4) Behind the Neck Pulldown or Presses
Why? Likely dangerous for rotator cuff and also leads to terrible
form where people strain neck forward and contort themselves
just to do the movement. Just NOT worth it.
Alternative: Pullup, TRX row, V-grip pulldown to chest, db row

5) "Bodybuilder bench press" - with elbows out and bringing
bar down close to neck

Why? Terrible for the shoulder joint and rotator cuff

Alternatives: Barbell bench brought to bottom of pecs with
elbows tucked into sides, DB chest presses (all varieties),
TRX or Ring Pushups

BONUS Exercise to Avoid: Long, slow, boring cardio
Cardio is ineffective and a complete waste of time

Alternative: Intervals, metabolic conditioning, bodyweight
circuits, burpees

You just don't have to exercise for a long time. You can get
amazing results with short, BURST workouts.

Meathead Garage Workout

So simple, yet so effective.

With a set of powerblocks and a kettlebell, I blitzed my upper body today in Joel Marion's garage. The workout was so metabolic that it even warmed me up in the 45 degree (Farenheit) Florida morning.

1A) PB Row - 4x10
1B) KB 1-Arm Overhead Press - 4x10

2A) PB Chest Press using the Rest-Pause System - 4x10
2B) PB Chest-Supported Row with Iso-hold at top of move - 4x10

3) Triceps Rest-Pause - 3x12

Good times. Weekend off, and we travel over to Miami for a couple of basketball games and a Mastermind meeting with Vince Del Monte. There will also be some delicious dinners at Zuma (steak), Il Gabiano (Mediterranean Sea Bass), and Prime 112 (Chilean Sea Bass).

But don't worry, there will no Justin Bieber-style incidents when I'm in Miami. I'm up and walking to the gym by the time that kid gets out of der clubz. Hope that kid gets it together, he could have a positive influence on the world with his reach.

Alright, time to finish off the TT Feb workout of the month. It's awesome, and we're back to another 30 minute workout. March will bring us a Female Fat Loss workout and a Meathead workout (since the TT Muscle Crew is getting antsy for more classic mass workouts).

10 Foods Never to Eat Because of One Ingredient

Deadlift and Gauntlet Garage Training

Two awesome workouts to tell you about today.

First, on Tuesday morning I made the drive from St. Pete's over to Tampa to visit the legendary PowerHouse Gym, one of my favorite lifting joints in America. I was hoping to see Big Ben Pakulski there, but he was not training. I know he's deep into preparation for the Arnold Classic, and I'm betting this will be the year he wins it all.

PowerHouse Gym in Tampa is the ultimate Meathead and fitness bunny gym.

While Ben wasn't there, a 65 year old guy beside me was deep squatting 365 pounds...and 25 year old guys talking about doing chest again tomorrow...for the 4th straight day. Ha! Good times.

I did...

1A) Deadlifts
1B) Box Jumps

2A) Military Press
2B) Front Squats

This morning I put a client through workout A from my upcoming February 2014 TT Workout of the Month called, "TT Thermo-30 3.0: Thermo Gauntlets". Here's a sneak peak:

1A) *Pullups or Bodyweight Row – 2 rounds of 40 seconds with 20 seconds rest (2-0-1-0)
1B) Decline Close-Grip Pushups – 2 rounds of 40 sec with 20 sec rest (2-0-1-0)
1C) Kettlebell Swings – 2 rounds of 40 sec with 20 sec rest
1D) *Med Ball Slams or Stability Ball Jackknife – 2 rounds of 40 sec with 20 sec rest
•    Do this circuit once only.
•    Rest-Pause Style: You will do each exercise for 2 back-to-back sets separated only by a 20-second rest-pause between the back-to-back sets.

That's followed by an MRT circuit (rest-pause style as well) and then a bodyweight finisher.

It starts off with a bang. You'll love it when the full program is soon released.

Eat this for dinner

Here's what I'm eating right now... I sit in my hotel room in downtown Toronto. I just returned from the Lakers-Raptors basketball game and there's no healthy food there, so I grabbed Chipotle for dinner while I watch football (and answer emails).

They will help you avoid BAD eating that comes with watching TV.
You know that mindless, late-night snacking that we all do...I even did it last night while writing out this list! 
I felt like such a failure (I'm definitely not perfect with my diet)...but I got over it quick. No need to beat yourself up about your diet mistakes. There's nothing you can do about it. Just move on and use these tips to transform:
1) Have a protein shake BEFORE dinner to keep you full. Worst case, have the shake after dinner rather than ice cream. Blend it with ice cubes and unsweetened almond milk.

2) Eat more vegetables at dinner. The more greens, the better. Learn to love spices, garlic, and olive oil.

3) Stay out of the kitchen/dining area after you are done eating. Removing yourself from the eating area helps.

4) Eat an apple, pear, or orange rather than a sugar-laden dessert.

5) Eat dinner later or go to bed earlier. The longer you are up, the harder it is to fight the cravings.

6) Buy pistachios (IN the shell). 49 pistachios equals 160 calories and 6g protein. Compare that to 14 chips at 160 cals and 1g protein. But only eat the pistachios if necessary.
7) Drink a club soda. Have a decaf Green Tea. Drink flavored water.

8) Keep the junk out of the house.

9) Brush your teeth or chew gum after dinner.

10) Stay busy talking with your wife or playing with your boy, not eating.

Those 10 tips will save the day!

300 pancake workout from Mikey Whitfield

Bodyweight 300  Workout Challenge By 
Mike Whitfield, Master CTT
Here's a NEW 300 workout that uses bodyweight
moves. You'll love the way you go from a lower body
exercise to an upper body exercise in this circuit.
Do the following circuit ONE time resting as little as 
possible. Don't move into the next exercise until you 
complete all reps.
1A) Vertical Jump and Stick (25)
1B) 1-Arm Extended Pushup (25/side)
1C) Alternating Reverse Lunge (25/side)
1D) Spiderman Climb (25/side)
1E) Stability Ball Leg Curls (25)
1F) Stability Ball Jackknife Pushups or TRX Atomic Pushups (40) 
1G) Total Body Extensions (60)
The finisher after the "Challenge Madness 300" is a circuit
of 5 exercises done 5 times. Each week, you'll try to improve 
the time it takes you to complete it.

Squatting in Canadia and Bodyweight in Lithuania

Boom. Back under the bar today at my gym in Canadia.

Last barbell session before a trip to Toronto for the weekend (Lakers-Raptors game on Sunday) and then heading to Tampa next week (will train at PowerHouse Gym with Big Ben Pakulski - hopefully).

Today's training:

1A) Squats (5-3-1)
1B) Burpees (just 4 reps for explosiveness, not fatigue)

2A) Bench Press
2B) Good Morning

3) DB Chest Press Rest-Pause

Pretty good times.

Now it's time to take Bally to the kennel.

When I decided to become a Certified Turbulence Trainer, I possessed plenty
of motivation to succeed.

I had struggled with my weight all my life, and Turbulence Training was the
to why exercise had never helped me reach my fat loss and figure
goals before. 

By becoming a CTT, I learned how to replace boring cardio and long, old-
school resistance training methods with the latest science backed techniques
for achieving fat loss.

TT transformed my body for good, and I was on fire to share my discovery
with the world.

I had the skills, and I found a small space to start training clients in, but I
soon discovered that you have to find a way to build your audience before
you can transform the world. 

The simple strategies I used to get my first clients were Facebook ads and
flyers featuring my own transformation.  I had friends and family who had
witnessed my success, and that gave me a place to start.

Now here's where my financial transformation gets rolling.

You see, Certified Turbulence Trainers have a unique and powerful tool to
use to get more clients.  It's the TT Transformation Contests that Craig
Ballantyne holds three times a year.

I don't have to tell you that skepticism and disappointment run rampant in the
fitness and fat loss world.  Our potential clients have tried plenty of exercise
programs that they find at gyms, on DVDs, and on the internet.  Most of the
time they don't get results, or worse, they even get hurt. 

We have to find a way to help them believe again.

The truth is that by getting just a few TT clients, convincing them to enter

dedication, I was able to fill my TT classes to capacity in just months.

three clients make the finals in the TT Transformation Contest that ended last
December, and by July my revenue from TT had risen to $3,000 per month.

I have added TT classes to the point that I am now teaching eight a week, and
they are all at capacity.  If I can make these kind of revenue gains in a small town
like Sonora, I know that CTT's in larger cities that double or triple that amount. 

The key is to get your clients results and success right away so that you have
the proof people need so that they will gladly give you their money and their time.

Here is a shocking fact: among my clients who have finished a Transformation
Contest, even if they don't officially enter, we have a 100% success rate

That means a loss of pounds, inches, and at least 2 sizes for all of my clients. This
is practically unheard of in our industry.  So the key is to celebrate your clients
success and get the word out. 

I was able to get coverage in our local newspaper about the success stories at
Gordon  Studio, and when your clients get great results the word of mouth brings
new students in, and puts money in the bank.

I am so excited about 2014, as the success of my students continues to drive the
success of my studio.  By offering a new Transformation Package to my clients
that covers diet and goal setting, plus priority reservations in my fullest classes,
I am confident that I double sales again by June.  

If I can do this in my tiny rural town, who knows what you can achieve as a

Deadlift and DelRay and Dropped Weights

This wraps up my last beautiful day in Miami. I'm writing to you from the 31st floor of a condo overlooking the Miami Marina, and watching cruise ships go in and out of the harbor. It's mesmerizing. I could work here all day.

But it's not to be. I must move on. Like a shark, I can't stay still.

My day started brilliantly, with my Big Thinking, Book Writing, and Meditation. A quick read of my daily documents, some warmup movements, and then I was out the door and on the way to the gym.

My deadlift session started at precisely 6:01am and was followed by military press and front squats. Recent records were set, and my strength is off to a good start in 2014.

During my workout though, I saw the strangest thing today.

A guy, looking for a place to do db presses, heaved his weights up on a massage bench. Now as you can imagine, this was not going to work out well. He quickly realized this as he laid down, and then proceeded to roll the dumbbells off the bench and let them drop almost three feet onto the floor, where he left them and didn't bother to return them. What an inconsiderate gesture. Just when you think that after 20 years you've seen everything in the gym...

Oh well. More entertainment for my long rests between heavy deadlifts.

By 7:20am I was home and having a BioTrust shake. Now it's off for a 1-day trip to DelRay beach to see my mentor, Mark Ford, followed by an early flight home to Toronto tomorrow. But I'll be back. Next week, in fact, for a 2-week adventure around south Florida, hitting both Tampa and Miami.

Most important, I'll be here for the TT Certification seminar on Friday and Saturday, Jan 31-Feb1st.

Grinding Workout to Burn Burn Burn

"What makes you grind?  You have to always be chasing something." - Ray Lewis

Almost one year, as I watched Ray Lewis play his final game in the NFL,
I became fascinated with "#grinding" approach to training and competition.

It inspired this incredible new workout program called, "TT Grindhouse". Here's what TT Members are saying about it:

Here's a teaser of what you'll try in Workout B (it's just the middle Metabolic Conditioning Circuit - there are a few other of my secret fat burning methods in that specific session):
2A) Bodyweight Bulgarian Split Squat - 15 to 25 reps per side (1-0-1-0)
2B) X-Body Mountain Climber - 20 reps per side (1-0-1-0)
2C) Power Wheel Rollout or Stability Ball Rollout - 20 reps (3-0-1-0)
2D) Stability Ball Jackknife - 20 reps (1-0-1-0)
  •     Rest 30 seconds and repeat 2 more times.
  • NOTE: Do each exercise at the recommended tempo. A tempo of 1-0-1-0 for example, means lowering for 1 second, NO pause at the bottom, returning to the start position in 1 second, and not pausing at the top before starting the next rep.

    Miami Metabolic and Muscle Building Update

    What a weekend in Miami. We've had so much fun, helped so many fitness experts, had big breakthroughs, and had even bigger meals.


    Last night was another dinner - although smaller - at Prime 112 in Miami. I had 2 "poisons" (see below), plus the field greens salad, a kobe beef appetizer (not as good as the beef I had in Japan), and the excellent sea bass with bok choy. I also shared a side of brussel sprouts and broccoli rabe. No dessert. No bread rolls.

    It was a lot of food (and salt). Went for a walk up Ocean Drive after dinner, and then this morning hit another great workout. I've had two great workouts in a row. Must be from all the good fuel this week.

    But I don't gain body fat when I travel. Instead, I use the opportunity to build muscle. It's simply a matter of a few nutrition and workout secrets.

    Here are the keys to burning fat even while you travel. It all starts with my 5 nutrition tips for avoiding travel - or weekend - weight gain:

    #1 - NO liquid calories with the exception of a "poison option" (explained below).

    #2 – Eat more protein early in the day to fight hunger at other meals

    #3 – Be boring at home between trips and as much as possible on weekends. Eat according to your normal routine as much as possible, and plan ahead for reward snacks and meals.

    #4 – Check restaurant menus in advance so you find fat loss options. Every restaurant has their menu online these days. #NoExcuses2014

    #5 – Pick your poison when eating out … that means you get to choose from one of: Drinks, Dessert, or Bread. You can't have all three. My poison is a Black Russian with Chopin vodka. I have a 2-drink maximum.

    That's a simple plan for keeping the belly fat off in 2014.

    1B) DB 1-Arm Overhead Press

    2A) Chin-ups
    2B) Bodyweight Squats 20-10 style
    2C) DB Chest Press

    He was already making DOUBLE the average trainer's salary.
    And yet, this self-described 'average guy' from a small town in Georgia
    easily doubled his income AGAIN in 2013.
    You need to know how he did it, because YOU can do it too. It might allow
    your spouse to quit their job, just like his did...
    Here the story directly from the man himself, Mikey Whitfield, Master
    Certified Turbulence Trainer.
    "Dear Craig, and all other TT Trainers,
    "It's hard to believe that just a little over 2 years ago, I was still managing a gym,
    training 1-on-1, running a few bootcamps and trying - but failing - to make money
    with an online fitness business.
    I wasn't even making $40,000 per year, despite working my butt off. Does
    that sound familiar? I know a lot of trainers that have the same struggles...
    But that all changed when I became a Certified Turbulence Trainer (Aug., 2011).
    At the time, my amazing wife, Sabrina, was a teacher and we both wanted her
    home with our son, but financially, we couldn't make that happen. Not even close.
    Fast forward to the first six months after becoming a CTT and not only did she
    become a stay-at-home Mom, but I was able to step away from my boring gym
    management job because of how fast my personal training business had exploded
    thanks to my Workout Finishers programs.
    That's great, HOWEVER, get this... my wife, who runs the numbers in our family,
    just informed me that we've DOUBLED my income again from 2012 to 2013.
    I'm doing things that I once thought were impossible, like...
    - Being able to take off work to go to my 3-year old son's mid-afternoon, mid-week
    school Christmas party
    - Donating hundreds of dollars to the ETR Toys for Tots drive, as well as helping
    local families in financial need through our Sunday School class and other charities
    - Buying a new home in a better school district and environment for raising our kids
    All of this was possible only after stepping out of my comfort zone and becoming
    a Certified Turbulence Trainer... incredible.
    If I didn't make that choice, I don't know where I would be today.
