Fast Bench Workout in the Mile High City

Whew. Today was my first workout in Denver and I moved really fast through an upper body meathead workout. It was a lot of fun, but perhaps made a bit tougher by the altitude.

1A) Bench Press
1B) Chest Supported Row

2A) DB Press
2B) More Rows, different grip

3A) Dips
3B) Chin-Up with Knee Up

Now to get to work on some video scripts. Big filming session tomorrow.

Also started an interesting 4-Day Food Rotation Diet that I will tell you about soon.

It does NOT include McDonalds. Check this out!

Just another reason to NEVER eat this junk again!

No "wood burgers" for me, thank you very much.

5 cab drivers in 1 weekend

No workout for me today, as I had an early flight from Orange County to Denver. But I did have an excellent weekend in Newport Beach.

And along the way I met 5 interesting cab drivers.

Four were excellent.

Three provided interesting conversations.

The first was a young man that had newly moved from Iran, you'll hear more about him in a future TT newsletter.

The second was an older gentleman from Iran that had been in America for thirty years. It was interesting to contrast him and the young man.

The third was the worst and severely tested my British Gentleman skills and patience. He was new, not too bright, and drove me around in circles. But eventually got me to Maestro's restaurant for dinner with Bedros Keuilian and the amazing Keuilian family. Fun times with lil' Chloe and Andrew.

The fourth was an Eritrean gentleman in Denver. We had a great conversation about what he's noticed since pot was made legal. He says he sometimes picks up people at the airport, drives them to store, they buy a bunch of pot candy, and then he takes them right back to the airport! He also thinks crime is down and things are better because it's legal. Not what I expected to hear!

And finally, the fifth cab driver took me too and from Whole Foods. He was polite enough to wait because I was polite enough to ask him politely.

I have no idea why I wrote this, but I hope you enjoyed it.

Squats and Writing in SoCal

Had a really great day of writing in my hotel room down here in SoCal.

I know, I know, I'm in California...and yet I spent the day writing.

Off to dinner with Bedros Keuilian and family tonight.

Last night Bedros and I went to Mortons, where I had the veal chop, broccolini, and brussel sprouts. Good stuff. Tonight it will be Sea Bass.

Today's workout was tough. It was hot in the gym and it was leg day. I trained at a busy 24-hour Fitness near the Westin Hotel in Costa Mesa.

1A) Squat
1B) Prisoner Squat Jumps

Pushup and Mental Challenges

Today in the hotel gym I was finishing up with some meathead curls.

A woman, about 45-50, walked in to use the treadmill.

She sneezed.

Without messing up my tempo, the BG in me said, "Bless you".

She smiled and thanked me.

I also made sure to say Good Morning to all the hotel staff, and I wrote a thank you letter for the housekeeper and left it on my pillow with a tip.

Strange looking gym at the ALT Hotel in Toronto beside the Airport. But that's where I did this pushup test.

Try it at both the end of a workout and at the start when you are fresh:

20 seconds of pushups (aim for 15 reps)
40 seconds rest
- 4 rounds

Rest 2 minutes

Repeat for up to 5 rounds.

Stop when you are unable to hit 15 pushups in a 20-second period.

LMK how you did.

I did 4 1/4th rounds when fresh...but only 3 rounds after a workout (not surprisingly).

Deadlifting and traveling

Yesterday's workout involved a Trap Bar (deadlifting bar that requires more work from your legs than your low back).

1A) Trap Bar Deadlift
1B) Long Jump

2) Hang Clean

3) Deadlift - 225 x 10 x 5 --- Every minute on the minute

4) Leg Curl

Then it was off to Toronto.

Thursday it's off to LAX for a 1-Day Mastermind session.

Sunday it's over to Denver for a week of Transformation Filming.

Then my first ever July 4th in the good ol' USA.

#1 problem with the tricky paleo diet

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last couple years, I'm sure you've heard of the "Paleo Diet". In fact, I eat very, VERY close to what most people call a Paleo diet. I even use Paleo Protein.

But I hate using the term Paleo Diet because it's simply just the REAL way that humans have eaten for millions of years, as opposed to the modern-day processed food diet full of grains, sugars, and processed vegetable oils.

Whether you have or not, what you probably DON'T realize is that it's the fastest growing eating plan in the world right now. From celebrities, chefs, elite athletes...even fitness experts like ol' CB - everyone is eager to try it or adopt it. (Or at least a darn close version of it!)

Even Bally the Dog eats paleo! Except when he's at Grandma's and she feeds him ice cream. Ha!

Here's why Paleo works better, quicker, and easier. There's no other diet or eating plan that provides so many benefits so fast:

- Increased Energy
- Clearer Skin
- Lean, Muscular Body
- Enhanced Libido
- Greater Mental Clarity
- All Day Stamina
- Better Workouts
- And more

The list goes on and on. Talk to anyone who's actually eaten Paleo for even a full month and chances are, they'll rave about the changes they started seeing in their body.

Now, the #1 problem...

You see, by far the biggest complaint we hear from many who try out the Paleo lifestyle is 'boring' or that it's too hard.

Often, people learn the core principles, experience results... but then get stuck eating bland meals of the same foods over and over again.

Today - that problem is completely solved for you with the something my friends over at Paleohacks have created -- their first-ever Paleo Cookbook!

Go here to try the incredibly delicious Paleohacks Cookbook

Just FYI, Paleohacks is the single biggest online Paleo community anywhere -- filled with 10's of thousands of people actually THRIVING on eating a Paleolithic style and enjoying the health benefits.

Inside, you'll not only get 125+ delicious mouthwatering recipes, they've also included some great bonuses as well - to help you get started as fast as possible. You'll get a bonus "Paleo 4x Cookbook" - which lists some great recipes that only require 4 ingredients - to keep it as simple as possible.

Not to mention they have tons of other sweet bonuses, which you'll see on the page. There's even a bonus that helps you solve a HUGE problem...how to dine out with friends and have a social life while staying strictly Paleo.

And to top it all off, it's on sale (including well over $100 in bonuses) for THIS WEEK ONLY at almost 30% off.

Want to eat some delicious recipes as soon as TONIGHT?

Go here to get your awesome Paleo cookbook today - while it's on sale

You're going to LOVE the amazing Paleo meal ideas in there!

Monday Meathead Chest Workouit

Legs are still too darn sore to go in for a deadlift workout, and I was really tight on time today.

So I stayed home and hit a garage gym meathead workout in honor of World Chest Day (which occurs every Monday, of course). However, I did not do bench presses...or even cable crossovers.

Workout

1A) PB Chest Press - 3x5
1B) KB Snatch - 3x8

2A) PB Low Incline Chest Press - 4x8
2B) Ab Wheel - 3x15

3A) KB OH Press - 3x25
3B) PB Curls - 3x15
3B) TRX Triceps - 3x15

Tomorrow, we deadlift.

And then start a 10-day trip to Toronto, Orange County, and Denver.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
Your day is won in the morning, by what you get done first thing. But it all starts with practice, planning, & prep the night before.

Best Drink for Fat Loss

There's a fat loss drink used by all the experts that you need to
know about.

From Dr. John Berardi to John Romaniello...from Tim Ferriss to
Isabel De Los Rios...and from Jason Ferruggia to lil' ol' me, CB.

Heck, I've given up on caffeine for weeks because of
the natural energy this drink will give you.

Plus, it tastes great AND it tastes more filling.

(So that rules out beer - LOL.)

And it's not an "energy drink" packed with sugar, caffeine, and
who-knows-what-other-dangerous-ingredients.

In fact, this drink is ultra-low in calories - WITHOUT artificial
sweeteners - and is perfect for intermittent fasting.

These days I'm making sure to go 12 hours between dinner and
breakfast, and after being up for 3 hours writing, I drink this
as a pre-workout booster before my 8am training sessions.

It's literally the perfect drink for fat loss.

And no, it's not water. Nope, not a protein shake either.

But it is the most important drink you can give your body for
health and fat loss.

I highly recommend it.

Get the #1 drink for fat loss here

It's easy to travel with too, and I'm taking a container on my trip to
California (this week) and Denver (next week) where I'll be
working with personal trainers, nutritionists and fitness
experts in closed-door meetings.

This drink will also power me through 12-hour filming days the week
after when I start creating our NEW Transformation Contest program.

And most importantly, it will prevent the colds and other airborne illnesses
that so many other travelers get.

If only they had this secret liquid weapon on their side like I do.

But hurry, you might not get this good of a deal ever again.

Drink up for health and energy,

Squats and C Butter

Today's workout combined with yesterday's trail run laid a beating on my legs. I'm happy to report they were only slightly tired at the start of today's session. But they were exhausted by the end. Couple of days off for them now...well deserved.

Today's Workout:

1A) Squat
1B) Box Jump

2A) Full Squat
2B) Good Morning

3A) Lunges
3B) Bear Crawl

Good times.

Couple of FB posts for you...

Lots of people see my photo all over the Internet and wonder if it's "really Craig Ballantyne"…the answer is Yes, it is…the problem is that it's been ripped off by many gyms, equipment companies (kettlebells in Qatar!), and even by GQ magazine...my 'so-famous-it's-infamous photo' was taken a couple of years ago out on my farm. For proof, you can compare it to the 'goof' in the videos on my Youtube channel (username: youtube.com/cbathletics). BTW, my 300 workout video has 1.8 million views!

After my workout today I went to the health food store to grab some of my current favorite nutrition snack...Coconut butter is amazing. Even better than coconut oil. Along with cacao nibs, these are one of the "rare" foods I eat. I mix with a banana, pecans, Paleo protein powder, and nut butter. That's breakfast.

Fun Trail Run and Cherry Blender Drink

TT Admission…Ssssshhhhh, don't tell anyone. The weather was so nice today that I went for a fun 30 minute trail run through the Old Grove near the family farm. I saw 4 rabbits, a skunk, a deer and a Bally the Dog! The fresh air was great…and the hills were tough.

Once in a while a run is fun, but I was reminded of why cardio is a bad idea for everyday use => Overuse injury from repetitive motion. If you do the same thing over and over again, your knees, hips, IT bands (outside of your thighs), and Achilles tendons take a beating. That's why you need a wide variety of bodyweight exercises instead.

Followed that with today's blender drink of: 2 cups water, 4 ice cubes, 1 serving Athletic Greens, 1 package of Jay Robb vanilla egg white protein powder, 15 frozen dark cherries, and 2 big handfuls of organic spinach (you can't taste it, trust me!).

My upper back feels amazing after yesterday's deadlift. Amazing in that it feels like a truck ran over it feeling. Good times.

I have a bit of soreness in my right lat, so I didn't do all of my lat moves today. Experimented with some new exercises and did some extra stretching for that area, instead.

Monday Deadlifting Back in Canadia

Great to be back home in Canadia after 19 days on the road. Fortunately the dog remembered who I was. Unfortunately he didn't get me any presents for "father's day". Then again, I'm not his father.

Alright, on to the workout. I haven't lifted in a bit (serious lifting, that is), and today was the start of a new 4-week program.

1A) TrapBar Deadlift
1B) Long Jump

2) Hang Clean

3) Deadlift - 225 for 10 sets of 5 EMOTM (every minute on the minute)

4A) Leg Curl
4B) Pullup Bar Hang (to decompress spine)

Great times. Warm gym. Humid day here on the farm.

But great lifting session, and I had a great sleep...except for the fact that I dreamt Brian Kalakay was evil. Long story. I woke up very confused.

BTW, Today's fitness observation: Vibrams + concrete sidewalk + overweight jogger = bad idea. #LetMeSaveYouSomeTrouble

10 foods killing you dead

A few years ago I discovered one ingredient NEVER to eat.

Literally, NEVER. And yet it's in 10 common foods you eat all the time.

It is one of the most common artificial ingredients, and I'll bet you've already had some today (probably in the peanut butter that you thought was healthy).

According to most experts and doctors, there is NO safe level of this ingredient and food producers should cease and desist the industrial production of it.

In fact, eating just a tiny amount of this nasty ingredient can increase your risk of heart disease and make you store more and more visceral fat...

A dangerous kind of belly fat that's almost impossible to get rid of.

But at the link below, my good friend and Food Investigator, Nick Pineault (aka - the "Nutrition Nerd") reveals EXACTLY how to rid this TOXIC food from your life forever:

=> Eliminate this TOXIC ingredient from your kitchen today!

Believe it or not, MANY of the "health" food labels that show zero amounts of this toxic ingredient actually contain significant amounts, but food companies get to LIE about it.

Seriously, thank the government lobbyists for another scam.

But due to Nick's relentless investigation of fat-burning Foods, you can now avoid this fat-storing nightmare:

=> See if this TOXIC ingredient is in your favorite foods

Please get rid of it immediately for your family's safety.

Eat healthy and lose fat instead,

Craig Ballantyne, CTT
Certified Turbulence Trainer

PS - Here are 10 foods you'll find it in...

- pizza and pie crust

- granola bars

- many otherwise healthy nut butters <= check the label!!!

- anything from a bag or a box

- almost every cheat food

- fast food milkshakes

- cookies

- donuts (sorry Homer!)

- some frappincino style coffees

- and worse, so many of your children's foods!

Discover this dangerous ingredient here <<<<<==

Please beware this TOXIC AVENGER!

Cleveland rocked

Happy Father's Day, TT Dads! A little update...I just finished up a fantastic 16 hour visit to downtown Cleveland. Wandered down by the water to check out the Dawg Pound at the Stadium (happy to know Bally the Dog wasn't in there!). Then a great dinner at Urban Farmer. This is the future of restaurants…to know where your food came from and to have the choice of grass-fed vs. grain. Cleveland's a great city with a rich history. Hope to be back for a game someday. PS – Stay tuned for my Hotel cheese story in an email this week. It will amuse you. Now it's time to fly home…arms won't be too tired since it's just a short trip across the lake.

Female Fat Loss Over 40

Ready for truth? No matter how much I wish this wasn't so...

Diet is MORE important than exercise.

Calories DO matter.

You need to burn more calories than you eat if you want to fit into your "skinny jeans."

However, you can't just CUT calories and do tons of cardio. If you do, you'll still end up with little or no fat loss results! And that's frustrating...

...and starving yourself combined with lots of cardio will also mess up your fat-burning hormones.

Hormones are the chemical messengers in your body that direct traffic. And if they get their signals crossed, they can do all kinds of stuff you don't want them to do...

Like hold on to trapped fat!

Here are the top 3 tricks you can use to keep your fat burning hormones doing their job properly...

1. Avoid Bad Sugar

This may seem obvious. Yet it's not just about calories...

You could eat precisely the right amount of calories to put you in the fat burning zone, yet fail to get results because the sugar is messing up your hormone called insulin.

Insulin is a bit like your body's own personal Fedex. It picks up packages--nutrients like protein, carbs and fat--and delivers them to your cells. But too much sugar causes fat storage in all the wrong places (like your thighs).

2. Do More of Your Favorite Activity

Everyone loves to sleep. And here's the great news. When you get enough sleep, you burn MORE fat and you control your cravings!

Sleep helps you decrease the amount of the stress hormone called cortisol.  Too much cortisol equals more belly fat. So you must relax and rest to get your cortisol low - and to burn belly fat. Plus, sleep helps you control your cravings so you aren't giving in to sugar all day. Please get some rest!

3. Stop Doing Cardio and Do This Instead

Your body needs exercise to release "feel good" hormones called endorphins that put you in a great mood.

They also keep your immune system functioning well and increase levels of sex hormones so you score a libido lift. The more you move, the more endorphins your body will produce.

If you need some inspiration you're in luck...

[...Unfortunately for the guys though... this is only for the ladies!...]

My fellow Canadian and Certified Turbulence Trainer, Shawna Kaminski, just released a brand new program called Female Fat Loss Over 40.

BTW - She's in her 50s and has the sexy' hot body of a woman in her 20s!

Shawna's system is based on the scientific TT principles, designed to elevate the fat burning hormones in all women over 40. With her system, you'll burn more calories than ever AND you will keep the weight off permanently (even from your trouble spots - your thighs and the back of your arms).

Pexting and Partying at the TT Summit

Each morning at 4am I send out a coaching Pext message to my top 7-figure clients. I call this Pexting because it is short for Pester Texting. My thoughts pester and irritate my clients into action. I'll be turning these into a new product in the fall. Until then, enjoy a 7-day bonus coaching Pext program from me to make this an amazing week.

Monday
You have all the money you need to solve the problems you have. You just need the time, patience, and planning to turn your money into the solution. Don't sacrifice time to chase more money because that time you'd waste has more value than the money you can earn. Use your resources wisely to eliminate the obstacles in your path.

Tuesday
Face your fears. Become the person you need to become in order to achieve the goals and dreams you want to achieve. Control what you can, cope with what you can't, and concentrate on what counts. Never give up on what is important to you...but make sure you know what that is. PS - Eat pure, think pure.

Wednesday
Rank your past days on 1-10. What simple changes can you make to improve? Eliminate the temptations, overcome the obstacles, make it easier and more rewarding to follow the best path. Make bad things harder to do and good things easier to do. Achieve little wins and celebrate small victories. Keep purity in thought, word and deed. Think back to a great day this year and what made it truly special. Be CLEAR about what you really need to be satisfied. It's probably not money. It was the people and experience. "Focus on what is true, what is good, what is right, and contentment follows. You only need: 1) Strong, positive relationships with family and friends; 2) To serve a cause greater than yourself, working for your family and community. This brings sense of wellness, purpose, meaning and value that lifts the human spirit." – Tom Shadyac

Thursday
What is your #1 problem in life? Be clear. Now...how much time are you putting in to fixing this? How much money are you spending on a solution? How many people have you reached out to for help? Why are the numbers in your answers so LOW? This is your #1 issue. Nothing else matters as much. Be clear on what matters, control what you can, concentrate on what counts.

3 ab exercises NOT to do unless you want a big waist

One is a waste, one is dangerous, and the other builds a blocky waist!

Here are three ab exercises NOT to do:

1) The Waste of Time Exercise: Broomstick Twists

I can't believe people still do these, but recently a guy did them while standing on a Bosu Ball. What a waste of time, they do nothing for you!

2) The Dangerous Move: Weighted Sit-ups

Sit-ups, especially weighted sit-ups, can cause a herniated disc. That's why you must avoid ALL movements where you round your low back (even bending over to tie your shoes). Cut those out!

3) The Ab Exercise That Makes Your Waist Bigger: Side Bends

When you do weighted side bends, you are telling your abdominal oblique muscles to get bigger. And if your obliques get bigger, your love handles will loom larger. Stop these ASAP!

But those aren't the only dangerous moves you are doing.

Cut those exercises out and save time in your workouts,

San Diego Upper Body Workout and New Bootcamp Location

Yesterday I did an early deadlift workout in Denver and then flew down to San Diego.

And yes, my arms are tired. And yes, I'm going to keep using that joke.

Today was an upper body workout in the hotel gym.

TT Summit Bootcamp change...we're now going to be doing the bootcamps in my suite. J/K But it is big enough!!! Maybe out in front by the wedding gazebo? Nah, we'll stick to bootcamps on the beach. See you tomorrow!

Denver Conditioning and Mile High Views

Great view made today's kick-butt bodyweight conditioning session a little more enjoyable...500 reps total of Total Body Extensions, pushups, bear crawls, box jumps, and more. 3 more days till I deliver a similar workout at the 4th TT Summit in San Diego!

And remember:

"You only go through life once so you might as well be the world's best." - Marty Edelson ..... Surround yourself with people who are better than you…they will bring out the best in you. Keep letting (positive) people know about your ambitions, and they WILL go out of their way to help you. Trust me.

Don't let the small opinions of others stop you from becoming your BIG SELF. Your BIG SELF is the person you know that you can become. Do it

5 new exercises not to do

Before we get to the exercises, here's a funny photo that I snapped at the end
of my Sunday morning workout in Toronto...because sometimes you need an
escalator IN the gym? Ha! Actually, it worked great, because the squat rack
was upstairs and I did a killer leg workout. I needed the help getting down. ;)

Now on to those 5 exercises you must avoid. I recently worked with Men's
Health on an article about:

"What are five exercises that trainers hate, and what smart
replacements are for each?
"

My answers on the Five Exercises Not to Do:

1) Weighted Situps

Why: These are terrible for the low back/spine, as shown by
research from Dr. Stuart McGill. These exercises compress
the discs in your spine and can cause serious low back injuries.

Alternatives: Stability Ball or Power Wheel Rollout, TRX
Mountain Climbers, Plank or Bodysaw/Rocking Plank, or Stability
Ball Plank (30% harder on your abs than a regular plank)

2) Triceps Bench Dips

Do NOT do triceps dips with your hands on the bench behind you and
your feet out in front of you. These are incredibly dangerous for your
shoulder joint and guaranteed to send you to the doctor. They are not
worth it at all.

Alternatives: Close-Grip Pushups, Plank-to-Triceps Extensions, and
lying dumbbell triceps extensions (don't waste your time with "kickbacks")

3) Broomstick Twists

People still do these? Why? They are useless. Absolutely useless.

In addition you MUST avoid all of those rotary ab machines at your
gym. They are dangerous for your low back and they do nothing but
make your waist BIGGER! Avoid those machines completely.

Alternative: Cross body mountain climbers, spiderman climbs,
side plank (really effective when done with a TRX)

4) Military Style Pushups - with elbows flared out to the side

If your body forms a T-shape when you do pushups, you're putting
your poor rotator cuff under a tremendous amount of stress. Just like
those triceps dips, you will end up in the doctor's office.

Alternative: Fix your push-ups by bringing your elbows in closer to your
sides so that your upper-body forms an upside-down V-shape when you
do pushups.

5) Slow boring cardio, especially the Elliptical machine

Why? It doesn't work for fat loss and research shows that cardio machines
over-estimate your calorie burning by 20% for treadmills and up to 42%
for the elliptical machine.

Cardio is ineffective and a complete waste of time

Alternative: Intervals, metabolic conditioning, bodyweight
circuits, burpees

You just don't have to exercise for a long time. You can get
amazing results with short, BURST workouts.

You'll also discover the 5 SIMPLE steps to looking 10 years younger.

your ideal body.

Denver travel and workout update

Yesterday was a smooth travel day from Toronto to Denver. One good thing about traveling on Sunday's is that there is less traffic on the roads. That way the short ride to the Toronto airport was short, and the unavoidable, extremely long taxi ride from the Denver airport wasn't any longer than usual.

Today's workout in Denver at the Colorado Athletic Club was:

Warmup - Shoulder mobility + WYLIT + pushup + Band Pull

1A) Bench
1B) Chest Supported Row

2A) Military Press
2B) Pullup

3A) DB Incline Press
3B) More Pullups

4A) Dips
4B) More pullups

Good times.

Breakfast:
Paleo Protein Powder shake and Athletic Greens

followed shortly by:

4 scrambled eggs, steamed spinach, olive oil, a banana, and decaf Green tea

Now off to a meeting with Jeff Siegel from www.BeyondDiet.com. He just happens to live out here in Denver, not far from the www.EarlyToRise.com offices.

BTW, did you see my article today? Fun walk down memory lane ... #1 lesson I learned from Stephen King

1B) Box Jump

2A) Front Squat
2B) Good Morning

3A) Leg Curl
3B) Side Plank

Now to fly to Denver...good thing it wasn't upper body day or my arms would be really tired.

Have a great weekend,

Craig
