How to Become A Personal Trainer

How to Become a Great Personal Trainer

How do I become a personal trainer?

This is one of the most popular questions that I get.

It's a great question, and an important question. With the loss of traditional jobs and a move to service-industry economy in North America, personal training is a way to earn a relatively good living while helping others.

Plus, having read my newsletter, you know I give a lot of current trainers a hard time (and with good reason, most trainers that I see lack a basic understanding of human physiology and human movement, and common sense - some trainers don't even understand the law of gravity).

In my opinion, there is a huge shortage of good trainers in the workforce.

Now it's relatively easy to become a certified personal trainer. Simply look up one of the popular certifications (ACE, NSCA-CPT, or whatever certification the gym you want to work at requires), get their study materials, and then pass their test. Then you certified and can be a trainer. That's it. (So it's easy to see why there are so many bad trainers out there. Remember that the more people the organizations certify, the more $$$ they make...)

However, to become a good trainer, you will need to learn much, much more and invest far more time and education than you need to just get a quick certification.

You will need to start by mastering the basics such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and an introduction to sports medicine.

For without this foundation, it is easy for a trainer to fall for the latest gimmicks and fads. If you don't know how the central nervous system controls the muscles, then standing on a wobbling board while doing biceps curls with a rubber band while reciting your ABC's backwards might seem like a good idea. But if you have a strong education in the foundations, then you'll take one look at that stuff and realize its bunk.

Fortunately, you can learn as much studying on your own as you could by being enrolled in a University Kinesiology program.

The plus side of going to University is that you will get a recognized degree and it also happens that a University or College degree (any subject however) is a pre-requisite for possibly the most recognized certification, that of the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

However, the obvious downsides of University are the required investments in time and money.

You must study on the University schedule and the fees are substantial.

One additional downside to a University education is the heavy emphasis placed on aerobic exercise science. Not only has this lead to the "You must do aerobics for fat loss" mentality, but also to the ill-advised "high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets are best for fat loss and health" nutrition recommendations.

While some coaches regard the formal education process as un-necessary, and feel that all the requisite knowledge can be gained on their own and in the trenches, I am a strong supporter of a formal education - provided the quality of education is high. Perhaps these coaches attended less than stellar Kinesiology programs (which I know do exist).

However, the education that I attained from McMaster University is without a doubt the reason for the quality of my programs and the level of my knowledge. Most influential was the neuromuscular physiology course taught to me by Dr. Digby Sale at McMaster University. But since you will never have the opportunity to attend his classes, I recommend in his place you read:

Supertraining - by Mel Siff

and

The Science and Practice of Strength Training - Dr. Vladimir Zatsiorsky

Either way, as Michael Master of http://www.earlytorise.com/ says, expect to spend 1000 hours of study to become competent (as he suggests is the case with any discipline). Of course, having a good mentor can significantly decrease the amount of time you will need to study (perhaps by 50%).

There are many "in the trenches" mentors that I can recommend, including:
Alwyn Cosgrove - Alwyn has just released a manual called, "The Professional Fitness Coach Program Design Bible".

Bill Hartman - Bill is one of the most knowledgeable combination trainer/therapist in the industry. Bill is a golf training specialist that can be reached at: http://www.yourgolffitnesscoach.com/

and of course, the programs you will find in my TT Membership Pass - Click HERE to become a Member.

So those are a couple of roads on how you become a competent personal trainer. But they aren't the only ones. I've even met former University-educated engineeers that are great trainers (Stephen Holt - http://www.stephenholtfitness.com/ - he also has a personal training mentor site), as they seem to bring a unique perspective to training.

And I haven't even touched on the business side of things...but I will in future articles,

CB

And here's some feedback on my TT Membership Pass - and a discount still exists for previous customers. Email me for more details...

"I picked up the TTM about two weeks ago and it is great. It's like having an entire fitness library at my finger tips - thanks!"
Chuck Fager

"Craig, you've always been on the cutting edge with your Turbulence Training technology, but I am even more impressed with your all access pass. I finally got through most of the information. Your programming is adaptable to every training situation from athletes preparing for their season to businessmen or females just wanting to raise their fitness levels or lose body fat. The science behind what you do is solid, and bottom line, it works. Well done!"
Bill Hartman, PT, CSCS, USAW, ART

"I also wanted to let you know that I dropped 5lbs based on your articles and programs and kept it off for 3 weeks now (I'm 5'7 and now a strong 130lbs)..I have an AAP through your website and have to say it is the best investment I have made thus far.. I am a health-knowledge "junkie" and have bought hundreds of e-books and print books and bought at least a dozen workout programs but this is the best structured and planned program I have come across to date. The simplicity and organization of the programs make the workouts manageble and fun and because you get results fast and you are motivated to continue on - changing and progressing day after day. It is an addiction to workout now and feel healthy... On behalf of so many afraid or too lazy to speak up I would like to say thank you!!"
Nadia Dedic

“Craig, I'm trying to think of an easy way to say this...You are the absolute BEST! I wanted to say another word, but it wouldn't be rendered appropriate! All I can say is WOW to the TTM. Actually, I'll have to say it again..."WOW!!!" There's so much in there - it's unbelieveable! I know some of my clients will hate me for these workouts, but love the results they get. This has to be the ultimate in training manuals. Hands down. Best I've ever seen. I'll be digesting these manuals like you wouldn't believe Craig. The 6-month bodyweight is worth the price of the package itself! And just because I have the pass doesn't mean I won't stop supporting and buying from you Craig - no doubt about it! Thank you so much! I'll make ya proud!
Lee Smith, Las Vegas

"Craig Ballentyne is one of the greatest and most innovative minds in the entire fitness industry. I would highly recommend any and all of his products to all those interested in taking their results to the next level. Craig also provides customer service that is second to none and has never hesitated to help when I needed a favor. When you put your trust in Craig you will not be dissapointed."

Detox Diets And Simple Carbs for Fat Loss

Fat Loss, Detox Diets, and Simple Carbs

Time for another interview with a good friend of mine, Mike Zappitelli.

Mike has walked the walk when it comes to being a personal trainer. He's a CSCS, a massage therapist, certified in Acupuncture, and on and on and on.

And as long as I've known him (going on 12 years now!), Mike has been in or near contest-shape.

He does not get "out of shape".

Mike's a champion natural bodybuilder (the best way to be), and he's recently helped a team of men and women from the Niagara Falls area dominate the scene. Let's find out how...

CB: Zaps, great success man! What's the secret to getting lean?

MZ: No secret here Craig. It's really as simple as staying consistent!

In every thing that you do, you have to stick with it to obtain results. Eating, training, sleeping, working, etc.

You have to have a sound regime every day and if not, develop a plan. This is not only to achieve the results that you are looking for, but also to help you get back on track after those days when you fall off.

Everyone has those days when we tend to slack off a little (we can't be 100% all the time). So, when this happens, your body will be better able to respond to anything negative.

Nutrition has such a large impact on your body composition and yet many people still neglect this area. Changing your nutritional intake to that of a more unrefined approach is the first 3-4 steps of 5 to getting lean.

As for training, the same thing goes. You definitely have to have a higher lean mass percentage.

And, if you don't, developing a sound strength training and interval program is key. These two elements are key to both developing a higher metabolic rate (both working and at rest) and burning fat most efficiently.

CB: Mike, getting back to the basics for a second, and the approach of the masses to fat loss, we hear a lot about 'detox diets'. What's your opinion?

MZ: I agree with you that 'detox's' are not necessary.

Now living a life that helps to limit the toxins going into you body is similar to a lifelong 'detox'.

It is impossible to avoid certain toxins, air being a great example on your part.

A 'long-term' detox is better! Some people eat bad foods regularly. To limit, if not eliminate, them from your diet completely would be detoxing in itself.

What people have to remember about detox plans is that they are not supposed to be used for 'weight-loss'.

The intention is to decrease/eliminate the many metabolic wastes/toxins within the systems of your body. By doing this, you are trying to achieve a more efficient working system, which, in turn, will produce a better functioning unit/body as a whole...affecting metabolism and energy levels positively.

CB: Mike, what are some basics about fat loss that people still have a hard time with?

MZ: People still have a hard time deciding what carbs are good and which ones are bad. They do exist!!!

Carbs coming from whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and grains are great carbs. Those carbs that have to be processed are the bad ones. These are often referred to as the 'refined' carbs. These are bad. You cannot find these types of carbs growing on any tree/plant anywhere on this planet.

Any time a food is changed or processed in any way, it will lose part of it's nutrient content bringing this food to a nutrient deficient level.

Foods that fall into this category usually involve cookies, crackers, breads, pastas, chips, candies, etc. These are all packaged goods in nice, flashy containers to market themselves for the consumer to buy.

You never see fresh fruits, veggies and meat/fish packaged and advertised like that. The only thing that might be flashy on these is the light reflecting on the plastic wrapping sealing the product (no fancy boxes with cartoons or whatever).

It is best to speak with a knowledgeable nutritionist to help you understand what's good and bad out there in this world of confusion (because there are some packaged foods that are definitely better choices).

Better education helps to make better decisions, which are ultimately in the end, your choice.

Part 2 of Mike's interview to come tomorrow...

Hard work, not fat diets, lead to fat loss,

CB

P.S. Don't forget...
You only have until the end of August to get the Turbulence Training for Women 4-Week Workout Report.

"I have to say that it is one of the best workout plan I ever come across. I have many exercise dvds ranging from walking, dancing, weights to kickboxing stuff but none as good as this one even without any dvd visual. I can feel the whole body being worked out. The most obvious is the tummy being worked out without even me realising it and the workouts are not that tedious or real difficult. However, the best is yet to come. I have knee joint problem for some time due to kickboxing routine exercises i have done in the past. Just before I started the TT exercises, my knees were so sore and I could not squat down without pain and stiffness. I thought I would not be able to do the TT exercises but surprise!
After the first workout, my knee stiffness was not so severe and after the 4th workout, I could squat down and get up fairly easily now. Although the knees are not completely flexible yet, I am sure if I continue with the exercises, it would help them tremendously.
I guess the weight bearing exercises do wonders to the knee joints. I hope this information could be shared with people who read your forum so that they can benefit from the exercises too. Thank you so much Craig for coming up with these wonderful workout."

Do Body Fat Scales Help?

Body Fat Scales

I hear from many people that have been exercising and eating properly for a week, but yet they are panicking because the scale weight hasn't changed.

When asked if their clothes fit better, they often answer "Yes", but quickly return to the dilemma of the scale and the lack of change.

Too many of us are hung up on scale weight only.

If you feel this way, then let me recommend four ways of monitoring your physical changes in order to assure you that you are losing fat and not losing strength or muscle.

First, take tape measure circumference measures of your arms, chest, waist, hip, and thigh. The waist circumference should go down significantly, while your arm and thigh measurements should go down to a lesser extent. Your chest measurement may also go down if you have a lot of back fat to lose.

If possible, have a reliable fitness professional take regular skinfold caliper measurements to help you estimate your body fat level. Do this every 4 weeks under similar conditions and you'll see that you are losing fat and gaining muscle while losing Turbulence Training. The third measurement is a new one I've added to the list...the electronic body fat scale.

First, let me say that these scales are most often inaccurate...However, they should be reliable if you take your body fat measurement under consistent conditions each time.

That way, you'll be able to track your changes reliably, even though you might not truly be the 13.67% body fat that the scale suggests, your change each week should be a reliable measure of how your body is changing.

And the fourth and final measurement is to test your strength levels. Your strength should not decrease during Turbulence Training, unless you are an elite powerlifter or bodybuilder.

Since the majority of people train with high reps and light weight, you can actually expect to gain strength when you start Turbulence Training. Take all of these measures now and then re-test in 4 weeks. Or even in 2 weeks. You'll find that your strength levels are the same (or better) and that you have lost inches and pounds of fat, but not muscle.

However, I must mention the disclaimer that your results depend significantly on your nutrition. No matter how good the program, if you don't eat according to a good fat loss plan, you'll never reach your fat loss goals. Aim to make small, consistent improvements and you'll get the most out of your workouts.

Reliable testing on a consistent basis will tell the true story,

Fat Loss & Video Games

Will New Video Games Help Kids With Fat Loss?

A couple of years ago I was asked by an electronics magazine (I forget which one) about a new interactive video game. The game, just like several new games coming out on the market, require the user to perform physical activity in conjunction with the game.

I was asked if I think this will work.

And I have no doubts that it will fail.

Interactive video games will not be successful. They will end up in the bargain bins in no time at all.

I'm not saying they aren't a helpful idea, I'm just saying they are wishful thinking.

If kids wanted to exercise, they wouldn't be choosing video games over exercise.

Adding exercise to video games is not going to help, let alone solve the child obesity problem.

Increasing physical activity and decreasing junk food intake are the only things that will help.

I also believe that kids can keep their video games, just as long as they get in some hard exercise and stop eating crap.

Get the kids active,

Bodybuilding Myth

Bodybuilding Myth

Ever since the golden age of body building (the late 60's) people have been doing typical high-volume body building workouts. Why? Because they were told this is the only way to train.

A typical "Arnold" body building workout involves a "body part split". You work one or two specific body parts a day, and only work that body part once per week. That leaves you in the gym 5 to 6 times a week (and often for 90 minutes a session).

And since this type of routine gets the most attention in bodybuilding magazines every month (and even in women's fitness magazines), it is the type of routine that almost everyone still follows, even today.

But has anyone ever stopped to think, is this the best way to workout?

Think of it this way. Our main goal is to be strong and lean. In general, most grrlAthlete readers aren't too concerned with having 16 inch arms, but just want to be stronger, leaner and more athletic.

And the truth is, bodybuilding programs just aren't the best way to achieve these goals.
A little known fact is that when bodybuilders are preparing for a contest and are trying to get lean they will cut their calories drastically, and add up to 2 hours a day of cardio!

Is this optimal?

No way. Who has this amount of time to spend in the gym, 6 days per week?

Not us. Not you. Not even the trainers in your gym.

Any routine that requires you to spend up to three hours a day in the gym and follow drastic diet to get results, is just not optimal.

But with efficient and effective routines like Turbulence Training and ShapeShift, you can become stronger and leaner, while spending way less time in the gym. This is because these programs were designed for this specific purpose.

These programs contain only the best exercises and workout schedules that help you get the most results in the least amount of time, so that you can create a strong, lean body.

So, if you haven't already, ditch the bodybuilding approach. No more arms only workouts, or chest-training days - and try a program that was designed to be efficient and effective.

TT workout.Stressed?

Remember this...Your breathing helps you control the level of stress that each situation causes. You need to focus on deep, SLOW breaths. A lot of people remember to breath deeply, but not slowly.Take a full 3 (or more) seconds for each inhale (to your belly), and 3 (or more) seconds for each exhale. In and out through your nose.

Do this until the stress subsides. You will benefit from practice. Stay strong and consistent!

30 minutes of activity...but dont' go too crazy on the cardio, especially if you are a beginner to fitness.

Why not?

Read "The Dark Side of Cardio" from http://www.turbulencetraining.com/

Friday
TT workout.

Make sure you heed this advice from nutritionist, Chris Mohr, Ph.D., "Always eat something before you workout. You can even consume your post-workout shake slowly during your workout so that you have some nutrients in your body while training."

Saturday
30 minutes of activity, check in with your social support group. A recent report showed that both men and women overestimate the amount of exercise they do...so make sure you check in with a professional trainer to monitor one of your workout sessions.

Sunday
Plan, shop, and prepare.

Make sure that when you are buying nuts that you avoid buying nuts that are roasted in hydrogenated vegetable oil. This might make the nuts taste good, but it adds bad fats back into your diet, thus defeating the purpose of eating nuts!

Ouch, another hidden sabotage to your efforts.

6 Nutrition Secrets to Success

Diet Secrets for Fat Loss

I recently had a chance to talk with 2 close friends, who are also clients using TT workouts.

Both of these guys have made amazing progress, but do you know what is holding them back from losing that last 10 pounds and building their best body ever?

Nutrition.

It might even be the same problem that you have. Whether it's not enough time to prepare all your meals each day, or whether its just something you know you need to improve, nutrition can be the biggest obstacle to your fat loss goals.

But all is not lost.

While some clients struggle with diet, there are some success stories. And here are their secrets.

One of my top success stories used to drink 2 liters (that's 8 cups) of soda per day. Plus, he lived in a frat house where they once had a month long hot dog eating contest. It was no wonder he gained a little body fat during college.

But after reading John Berardi's Gourmet Nutrition e-book (Click here to get this highly recommended resource), something clicked. He realized the secret was to take a little time each night to prepare tomorrow's meals, and he'd be set (in addition to eliminating the soda).

So here's what he does:

1) He buys a lot of fresh produce from the grocery store. And takes the time to go at least twice per week to the grocery store to get the fresh produce.

You have to make the effort to go out and get good produce, and then while you are on a roll, cut up a week's worth of vegetables and store them in your fridge.

2) Then he grills, bakes, or BBQ's chicken, salmon, and other lean protein sources that he then adds the protein to the gourmet salads that he prepares from his fresh vegetables and spinach leaves.

That makes his meals very nutritionally dense, low in total calories, high in appetite suppressing fiber, and full of lean protein sources to support muscle growth, a fast metabolism and a controlled appetite.

3) He snacks on almonds. Raw almonds, not the ones that are roasted in hydrogenated oils and smothered in salt. Research shows that almonds help in weight loss, help to control cholesterol, and contain healthy fats, fiber and protein.

4) He starts his day with protein (a special omellette recipe from Berardi's cookbook) and oatmeal.

5) He replaced soda with Green Tea and water.

6) He follows Berardi's 90-10 rule. If you are nutritionally perfect 90% of the time, then you won't have to worry about the 10% of the time when you have some pizza, or other foods that otherwise would get in the way of your fat loss efforts.

So take some time at the beginning of this week to do a major grocery shopping trip and then spend 30 minutes preparing some fresh produce and fat loss meals for the rest of your week.

Helping you avoid nutritional roadblocks,

CB

P.S.

Lower Body Workout Routine: Thursday

Lower Body Workout Routine

Trained a little later in the day, due to the 1-hour teleseminar I was doing with Kyle Battis for his home gym secrets website

It was another great call and we discussed a lot of home gym options...Kyle has a dream home set up...you should really check out his site.

...

So I trained with my two pro strength coach buddies again...and we did another tough, but great workout. Lower body this time.

1) Front Squat (3x8)

2) Barbell Lunge (3x6-8)

3) Belza Split Squat with bar in front squat position (3x6)
[see picture for foot set-up of Belza Split Squat]

4) Glute-ham raise on ball (2x12)

This is a great workout for both athletes and bodybuilders. This will put on lots of mass for guys (if you eat heavy and train heavy) but at the same time hits important muscles for performance.

Sitting down to train legs, kind of an oxymoron isn't it?
