2 food subs for fat loss

I spent yesterday enjoying my final days in Toronto. I'm off on a big trip this fall.

It's going to take me to Europe, Mexico, Nicaragua, Asia, and Lapeer, Michigan. Denver as well, a few times. Possibly even Moscow. And it all starts in a few hours when I head off to Roman's wedding, of course.

So yesterday I spent as much time as I could wandering the city on a perfect fall day. While I was out, I saw so many folks eating junk that was keeping them fat, bloated, and tired. It's a shame, because so many of these foods could be substituted for something much healthier and equally delicious.

Last week I ran a poll on my Facebook page. The results were pretty shocking.
 
I simply asked, what exercise do you hate the most?
 
It's a bit of a trick question, you see, because in most cases, the exercises you hate the most are often the ones that give you the best results.
 
For example, back in the day when I trained Boris, one of my hardest-working clients, his face would grimace every time I had him do split squats or dumbbell rows. Both of those are demanding total body exercises. But those were the two of the best moves for him.

Dozens of exercise and burpee substitutions

This is long overdue, and for that I apologize.
 
Here's the Turbulence Training Ultimate Exercise Substitutions List.

Feel free to add your suggestions or follow up questions below, and we'll keep building this great resource. There are at least 21 great replacements for common exercises that TT readers can't do for one reason or another.

*****************************************************
For Squats -> You can do split squats, lunges, step-ups, reaching lunges, 1-leg deadlifts, or 1-leg hip extensions

For DB Incline Press -> You can do DB Chest Press, DB Floor Press, DB Standing 1-Arm Shoulder Press, Dips with Knee-ups
 
For cardio intervals -> Do this one 639-muscle exercise instead

For DB Chest Supported Row -> You can do DB Row, BB Row, Seated Row, DB Renegade Rows, DB Rear Deltoid Raise

For Dips with Knees-up -> Any version of close-grip pushup, DB Floor Press, DB Close-grip Press, DB Close-grip Floor press

For DB Chest Presses (of any kind) -> You can do one of these:

- pushups
- close-grip pushups
- decline pushup
- elevated pushups
- off-set pushups
- pushups with your feet on the ball
- pushups with your hands on the ball
- spiderman pushups
- pike pushups
- or possibly the hardest two hand pushup of them all, decline close-grip spiderman pushups

For DB Split Squats -> You can do:

- 1-leg lying hip extensions for beginners
- high-rep Bulgarian split squats for advanced
- high-rep split squats with your front foot elevated 4-6 inches for intermediate
- 1-leg deadlifts
- 1-leg squats onto bench
- 1-leg squats standing on the bench
- deepstep-ups
- reaching lunges

For DB Rows -> Using the smith machine, you can do...
- inverted rows
- underhand inverted rows
- inverted rows with your feet on the ball
- inverted rows holding the ends of a towel hung over the bar (advanced grip strength there!)

For DB Rows -> Using the pullup bar, you can do...
- eccentric pull-ups
- regular pull-ups
- sternum pull-ups
- chinups
- side to side pull-ups
 

Not strong enough for Stability Ball Leg Curls -> You can do:
- Lying hip extensions and 1-leg hip extensions
- Then progress into hip extensions with feet on the ball.

If you have pain during squats & Lunges -> You can do:
- lying 1-leg hip extensions
- trap-bar deadlifts
- split squats might even work

Whew.
That had to be helpful, right?

The Squat Burpee Reset Post

Great workout at the YMCA.

Squats, db press, snatch-grip deadlift, DB row. Heavy.

After training I biked home for a www.turbulencetrainingfanpage.com and www.successqna.com session, where I received a great question about getting out of a rut. It tied in nicely with something I wrote on my TT member's site today:

RESET

Stop. Wait. This is all going a little bit wrong. Back it up. Rewind.

Better yet, hit the reset button and let’s start again.

Erase those bad habits. Pick up our tempo. Restart again on better habits at a faster pace. We can do better, we can do more, we can fix this, let’s sort it out.

No matter how bad the day started, no matter what’s gone wrong this week, all we need to do is hit a personal Reset button in our minds and we can be back on track in no time.

We don’t need to wait until January 1st.

We don’t need anyone’s permission.

As soon as a mistake is made, we RESET.

If we have to deal with a dip in life, just RESET.

If negative people have just surrounded us, coating our minds in their toxic waste, we simply need to take in a big deep breath and RESET.

We cannot control what other people do. We cannot control what happens around us. But we CAN control what happens within us. RESET.

Worry not about others. RESET ourselves.

Worry not about external events. RESET the internal environment.

Return yourself to the correct position for success.

Bad days. RESET.

Good days. Keep going.

Great days. RE-DO.

Never forget you always have that little button under your control.

Just like on my old Nintendo 8-bit back in ’89.

When things aren’t going your way – RESET.

Go back to zero.

Start all over again.

Take back control.

Take action.

RESET.

Hollywood Exercise Circuit

According to one of those celebrity gossip magazines (Bally the Dog has a subscription, I swear!), "In less than five months, Jessica Alba has gone from pregnant to bikini-clad" thanks to one exercise.
 
Alba's mean ol' trainer makes her do this exercise almost every workout. And mean ol' CB likes it too. In fact, I used it yesterday morning while training one of my "guinea pig lab rat" clients out here on the farm. Ol' Bally the Dog and I put together this circuit to burn the fat for all TT readers:
 
1) KB Swings - 25 reps
2) Narrow-Stance Bodyweight Squats - 20 reps
3) TRX Ab Fallouts - 15 reps
4) Jump Rope - 30 seconds
5) Jessica Alba's Secret Hollywood Fat Burning Exercise - 20 seconds
 
Yep, that's all you need of her Hollywood fat burning exercise to jack up heart rate, get you back in shape, and boost your post-workout metabolism.
 
Do that circuit 3-5 times, with 30-60 seconds of rest at the end of each circuit.
 
Oh, and that mystery exercise that Jessica Alba uses?
 
Most trainers think there is only one way to do it.
 
NOT true.

The Fat Loss WHOOSH

Ugh. I hate seeing a post like this in the TT Member's
forum, but it reminded me that not everyone loses 2-3
pounds per week like our Transformation Champions.

(But there was good news...eventually our member achieved
the controversial, rapid "Whoosh" fat loss effect.)

Here's what happened...

One member, JDS1971, wrote:

"I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm a 6'0,
207 pound, 40 year old male. Last summer I used TT to go
from 207 to 193, but then I fell off track and gained the
weight back.

"I've started TT and a strict diet again (Jan. 2) but after
3.5 weeks there's been no movement on the scale or in
my measurements."

"I'm really discouraged and thought I was doing everything
right, but not getting the results as before. I'm even
lifting heavier weights than last time."

OUCH.

We don't hear this a lot at TT, but I'll be honest, trouble
cases like this pop-up once in a while.

One member, JudgeBill, made an interesting post that
foreshadowed what was to come next. JB said:

"I tend to go through weight loss bursts - i.e. I'll lose 2-3
pounds in 2 days, and then level out. Not entirely sure what
causes them - it's not always tied to diet perfection. Keep
grinding, and you'll probably wake up at 200 soon."

Those fat loss bursts are known as the WHOOSH effect.

Highly controversial and not truly understood, here's what
my friend and extreme fat loss expert John "Roman"
Romaniello said to me about the WHOOSH.

"Even the toughest fat loss plateaus eventually experience
a 'WHOOSH' effect where your body weight rapidly drops. This
happens because of a strange biological twist of fate in your
fat cells.

"During a regular fat loss program, your fat cells, which
normally do not store water, may take in water as the stored
triglycerides are burned through diet and exercise.

"This gives the appearance of a fat loss plateau...which then
can be broken, rapidly, through a couple of diet tricks. You
then experience extreme rapid fat loss at once - thus known
as the WHOOSH effect."

So if you're struggling, do NOT give up.

You could be one WHOOSH away from rapid results.

And so Roman and I put together 3 workouts that will
give you the WHOOSH.

But back to our TT Member, JDS1971...

SUCCESS

Eight days after his initial forum post, JDS was back with
this update:

"Well, had my whoosh effect after the change you suggested.
I lost almost 4lbs since Friday. Persistence pays off! I also
experienced a bit more energy and focus during yesterday's
workout after some of the adjustments."

And that's how it goes...when you make small adjustments in
your diet and training that can trigger the fat loss WHOOSH.

YOU too can experience the WHOOSH effect, no matter much you
are struggling with a fat loss plateau.


Don't give up.

Just make this a small adjustment.

Denver to Toronto to The Weight Room

Just finished another great visit to Denver and time with the EarlytoRise.com team. Much accomplished. Thanks for everything, everybody.

Unfortunately, the travel home was bad. A 3 hour delay and line-ups all over the place. It was frustrating. Particularly the 20-minute taxi line-up right in front of the 15 people in the smoking section at Toronto's airport.

Oh well, had a great and heavy workout today.

Squat
Bench
Deadlift
BB Row

Takes about an hour. Kicks your butt. 

But so much better than cardio.

Did you know this?

In one study, researchers found that 300 hours of cardio per year led to a measly 6-pound loss in men (and women, well, they only lost 4 pounds). Average it out and that’s about 50 hours of cardio for a SINGLE pound of weight lost – at BEST. Hmm, cardio is a ridiculous waste of time for fat loss? Yep. (Reference: Obesity 15:1496-1512, 2007)

Terrible.

Ludicrous Workout

There is a scene from one of my favorite movies that perfectly describes the approach you should take with your fat loss workouts.
 
It all starts with a rebel force fighting an evil villain in a galaxy far, far away.
 
Yes, I'm referring to...
 
Spaceballz
 
Here's how the particular scene plays out...the setting is the control room of Dark Helmet's "Spaceship One" where the evil villain is preparing for pursuit of the hero, Captain Lone Starr.
 
Colonel Sandurz: Prepare ship for light speed.

Dark Helmet: No, no, no, light speed is too slow.

Colonel Sandurz: Light speed, too slow?

Dark Helmet: Yes, we're gonna have to go right to ludicrous speed.
 
Ludicrous level.
 
That's how your fat burning workouts should be!
 
Ludicrous.

Vegas Workout to Denver Work

Great final workout here at the Aria hotel. The gym is great and opens at 5:30am 7 days per week. Plus, while it's still a Vegas hotel, it's not a super party hotel, so you don't run into that many drunk people in the elevators at 5am. That's always awkward.

Squat Push Pull and Steak Dinner in Vegas

Great dinners in Vegas so far. Had the blackened cod at American Fish last night, and grass-fed ribeye at Jean Georges Steakhouse night before.

And just finished up a workout, now I'm watching the sun rise over Vegas from my 33rd floor hotel room. Looks great. Almost as entertaining as the lightning storm I watched the other night.

Today's workout was fantastic. Even better than the one we did at Randy Couture's gym the other day.

There were two squat-press-deadlift/pull style circuits.

1A) Barbell Front Squat - 8 reps
1B) 1-Arm Overhead DB Press - 6 reps per side
1C) Heavy DB Swings - 20 reps
I did 4 rounds.

2A) 1-leg squats - 6 reps per side
2B) Pushups to failure
2C) Pullups - 6 reps
Did 4 rounds.

Great times. Finished off with 2 mechanical drop sets of inverted rows.

Sweat Fest and Funny Story

Five days in Vegas started yesterday with a trip to Randy Couture's Xtreme Couture gym and then a great sea bass dinner at Joe's Prime Steak and Crab restaurant. Tonight we might go to American Fish at Aria. I'm all about seafood, not steak, these days.

Now for a funny story...earlier this week I was visiting my friend’s “hardcore” gym.

We decided to do a TRX and tire flipping circuit.

Round 1 was TRX rows, TRX triceps extensions, TRX biceps curls, and then 30 seconds of flipping the tire.

After banging out the TRX exercises, I headed over to the tire. Squat, lift, push, and flip. Boom went the tire.

And that seemed to wake up a poor little cock-a-roach (by little, I mean big as my thumb) that was having a siesta in the tire.

It skittered away. Under the falling tire as I completed my next rep.

But of course, it being a cockroach, I couldn’t kill it. And it escaped into the protection of a forest of kettlebells sitting on the floor.

So there’s probably going to be a very surprised gym member when they go to grab their kettlebell for swings.

Oh well, at least the cockroach wasn’t farting.

20 minutes better than CrossFit

Here's why this is better than Cross-Fit...
In the time it takes someone to drive down to their local Crossfit, you could do a better cross-training, fat-burning workout at home 
 
 
And don't even get us started on the 60 minute P90 videos or cardio...there's no need for workouts to last longer than an episode of CSI. All of these workouts beat you up because they have you do TOO much, too fast. Here's a better way to exercise no matter which one you prefer:
 
 
By the way, in doing my research on this new type of training, I demanded the creators of these workouts, Tyler Bramlet and Adam Steer, to tell me "In 25 words or less, why these cross-training workouts are better than Cross-Fit!"
 
Their reply:
You get the same benefits as Crossfit - fat burning, movement skills, 'ready-for-anything' fitness - but Tyler's workouts are accessible for beginners, and don't have the pitfall of high injury rates.

Squat Press Deadlift Repeat

Yesterday's workout was great. So simple. Squat, db press, and snatch-grip deadlift. Added in some chin-ups with knee-ups to end it all.

And I witnessed a bunch of funny things...writing that up for an article on Wednesday.

Until then, I'm back in the gym for another Squat-Press-Deadlift workout today. Long story, but it's a 4-day per week, low-volume, high-intensity experiment. And so far, so good.

By the way, someone asked me this on FB yesterday:

"How do you target the quads?"

Answer:
It's not a training mindset I think many people should have. That said, great exercises would be:

Front squats, forward lunges, close-stance back squats, step-ups. All done with intention and focus to contract the muscle. Leg extensions also work, but is not the type of multi-muscle training I recommend.

Woke up this morning and I am feeling the last two days of training. It's also my first two days on this new program, so that shouldn't surprise me. Our muscles always get sore when we start a new program. Over time, our body adapts, and we experience less soreness from the same training.

My latest S-P-D workout (squat-press-deadlift movment) can also be called the "Backyard, on the farm, out in the sun, enjoying every second of it" workout was:

- Kettlebell front squats (loving the "honesty" of this exercise
- KB 1-arm Overhead press
- KB swing

- Pullup
- Pushup challenge

- TRX 1-leg Squat

Squat Bench Deadlift

After a week of low-volume, low-intensity training, I'm back on the strength train.

Yesterday was Squat-Bench-Deadlift. Three sets of 3-5 for each. Followed by 1 set of bent over barbell rows. Then I ran out of time. I'm still working on the best weekly approach for my new advanced strength programs.

Today will be a kettlebell metabolic workout in the backyard out on the farm.

Yesterday was the nicest day of the year...I love this time of season. Hopefully today is a carbon copy.

But for now, time for a dog walk in the fresh fall air.

Boost Afterburn by 450%

Time to deliver the latest scientific research
showing that you can burn an extra 450% more calories by
using a specific type of short, burst workout.

Let's get right into this incredible interview I recently did with a large newsletter.

1. What is the biggest mistake you've seen people make when they
get started on a program for losing fat?

Answer:
Great question.

It's heartbreaking really, but everyday I see so many busy men and
women chained to the treadmill and elliptical cardio machines.
Unfortunately, that doesn't get them any results. And each week
they come into the gym looking the same - or in many cases, worse.

It's really sad because I know these folks have families, friends,
and hobbies that they'd rather be spending their time with. But I
know they are bothered about their stubborn belly fat, and so they
continue to come back to what I call, "The Cardio Confessional"
where they pray that results will come (although they never do).

Study after study proves that cardio just doesn't work for weight
loss. A moderate amount of this type of low-intensity exercise is
fine for your health but it is absolutely worthless if you want to
lose belly fat.

2. Really?   Cardio is that bad for you?  Why is that?

Answer:
Yes, it's the truth all right, the politically incorrect truth,
too. I say that because many fitness companies survive only because
they are able to sell the Cardio LIE to gym members or to folks
buying an expensive treadmill, bike, or elliptical machine for home.

If everyone knew that, a LOT of gyms would go out of business, and
equipment manufacturers too.

What most folks don't know is that cardio machines dramatically
over-estimate the number of calories burned in an exercise session.
According to Shape magazine, the elliptical machine is the worst
offender, over-estimating the number of calories burned per workout
by a whopping 42%!

That's borderline criminal. It's like having the speedometer in
your car tell you that you're going 30 miles per hour when you're
actually going 60. It's extremely dangerous.

That's just one reason you're not losing weight despite the hours
that you exercise each week. Cardio also increases your appetite
and doesn't give you a post-workout afterburn (I'll explain the
importance of this amazing effect in a moment.)

It's just not fair. And that's why so many folks struggle. Not to
mention the fact that doing the same long, slow exercise sessions
every day can cause knee pain, back pain, loss of muscle, and
accelerated aging.

Cardio has about 10 strikes against it. It should have been called
out a long time ago!


3. What should people do instead of cardio, is there another type
of workout that's more effective?

Answer:
That's your best question yet, and brings us to the actual science
of fat loss.

According to researchers from all over the globe, including
America, Britain, China, Japan, Australia, and Canada, the best way
to exercise for fat loss is to use short, burst workouts. These
workouts cause the "afterburn" effect in your body, elevating your
metabolism for almost two days after each short exercise session.
It's like doing three or four workouts at once, but in half the
time of a single cardio session.

These unique short burst workouts do NOT require any fancy
equipment. You can do them in just a small space in your living
room, basement, garage, or even a mega-busy commercial gym.

In fact, I created a 16-week program (that also delivers an
additional 8 weeks of beginner and intermediate workouts) to help
busy men and women lose fat fast - while building muscle, too, if
that's their goal.

I call this trademarked system, Turbulence Training.

And a new study recently proved that these short, under-30
minute workouts can help you boost your calorie burning by
over 450% compared to a normal workout.

Italian researchers put subjects through a one hour traditional
weight training workout or a 22-minute high-intensity interval
resistance workout (like you would do in Turbulence Training).

The traditional workout increased 22-hour post-workout afterburn
by only 98 calories. But the high-intensity interval resistance
workout boosted afterburn by over 450 calories!

That's the power of using short, burst workouts to burn fat,
and why you don't need to exercise as much when you are using
the Turbulence Training System to transform your body.

4. How does Turbulence Training Work?

Answer:
Now we're really diving into the good stuff.

When you do Turbulence Training, you'll exercise in a short, burst
style with an increased intensity. You'll do total body movements
using your bodyweight or a set of dumbbells (these are cheap and
easy to store at home).

You'll also use my trademarked secrets to cut the workout time by
increasing exercise density.

If you've done a typical workout advertised in a fitness magazine,
you've probably taken long breaks between exercises, but you won't
with Turbulence Training. Instead, you'll use my secret method of
combining exercises so that you end up getting the power of 10
(yes, 10!) workouts in one.

It all adds up to quick results in minimum time and minimum space,
without having to invest in an expensive gym membership or fancy,
large machines that end up doubling as clothes racks in your home
(because you can't stand using them).

5. It really only takes 90 minutes per week to get amazing results?
 How is that possible?

Answer:
This is a great question to let me sum everything up. You've
learned a lot in this interview, discovering that cardio doesn't
work for fat loss, and that gym machines "lie" to you by
over-estimating the number of calories you burn each session.

The end result with slow, boring cardio workouts done on a
treadmill or elliptical machine is frustration, but not fat loss.

On the other hand, if you switch to short, burst workouts, that can
be done at home or in a gym with minimal equipment - and much less
time - you'll triple or quadruple your fat burning results and you
will benefit from the afterburn effect to boost your metabolism for
up to 40 hours after your workouts.

And by taking the science one step further and using my
trademarked, unique exercise system, you'll be able to lose fat in
just three fast, fun, and effective workouts of only 30 minutes per
week.

That's 30 minutes from start to finish, too. There's no hidden
extra warm-up or cool-down in there. You'll finally be able to lose
10, 20, even 30 pounds or more of fat in just a few weeks with this

Intermediate Workout C from Turbulence Training 2.0
 
Warm-up Circuit:
- Go through 2 times with no rest between exercises.
- Rest 20 seconds between circuits.
o    Prisoner Squat - 20 seconds
o    Pushup or Kneeling Pushup - 20 seconds
o    Stability Ball Leg Curl - 20 seconds
o    Band Pull - 20 seconds

1A) Goblet Step-Up - 30 seconds per side
- 15 seconds rest/transition.
1B) T-Pushup (alternating sides) - 30 seconds
- 15 seconds rest/transition.
1C) KB (Kettlebell) or DB (Dumbbell) Swing - 30 seconds
- Rest 30 seconds & repeat 1 more times for a total of 2 circuits.

2A) 1-Arm DB Squat & Press - 40 seconds per side
- 20 seconds rest/transition.
2B) DB Renegade Row (alternating) - 40 seconds
- 20 seconds rest/transition.
2C) Suspension Y's or DB Rear-Delt Raise - 40 seconds
- 20 seconds rest/transition.
2D) Suspension Curls or DB Curls with Palms-up - 40 seconds
- Rest 30 seconds & repeat 1 more time for a total of 2 circuits.

3A) Narrow-Stance Bodyweight Squat - 20 on, 10 off x 4 rounds
3B) Jumping Jacks - 20 on, 10 off x 2 rounds
3C) Narrow-Stance Bodyweight Squat - 20 on, 10 off x 4 rounds
3D) Jumping Jacks - 20 on, 10 off x 2 rounds
 
Pretty cool, huh?

Forgive yourself and move on

We all make mistakes. No one is perfect.
 
So if your hand was in the cookie jar too much this weekend, or if you had a few too many drinks while enjoying time with friends and family, or if you just watched too much football and ate too many nachos, then I want you to:
 
STOP.
 
Stop worrying about it.
